Urshifu-Rapid-Strike
Overview
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike is one of the most dangerous wallbreakers in National Dex. Its signature move Surging Strikes is a Water-type multi-hit attack (three hits) where every hit is a guaranteed critical hit, so it punches through the defender’s Defense boosts and the attacker’s own Attack drops. Combined with Unseen Fist, which lets its contact moves ignore protection (Protect, Detect, etc.), it becomes extremely difficult to wall through conventional means.
Note that, in modern generations, critical hits do not bypass screens — Reflect still halves the damage of Surging Strikes. Crits only ignore the defender’s positive stat stages (and the attacker’s negative ones).

Common Sets
Choice Scarf (Revenge Killer / Cleaner)
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Aqua Jet
- U-turn
Choice Scarf (32.5% of sets) is the most common item. It trades immediate power for speed, outrunning the relevant unboosted metagame short of Regieleki-style outliers to revenge kill and clean late-game. Surging Strikes with guaranteed crits ignores any defensive boosts, while Close Combat provides a powerful secondary STAB (though it is resisted by Flying-types). Aqua Jet offers priority, and U-turn keeps momentum — though the Scarf set most often just clicks Surging Strikes to pick off weakened threats and contest faster sweepers.
Choice Band (Physical Wallbreaker)
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Aqua Jet
- U-turn
Choice Band (26.1%) is the second-most common item and hits like a truck. The move pool stays the same, but the Band set sacrifices the Scarf’s speed for raw power, turning Surging Strikes and Close Combat into immediate two-hit answers to most of the tier.
Damage Calcs
- 252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits, all crits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 75-90 (24.7 - 29.6%) — Water is resisted, so this is only a 4HKO; don’t try to break Toxapex with the Water STAB
- 252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits, all crits) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Toxapex: 99-117 (32.6 - 38.5%) — even uninvested, resisted Water only 3HKOs Toxapex
- 252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits, all crits) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Landorus-Therian: 306-363 (95.6 - 113.4%) — can OHKO on high rolls, otherwise guaranteed 2HKO
- 252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Landorus-Therian: 161-189 (50.3 - 59.1%) — guaranteed 2HKO (resisted by Flying)
Checks & Counters
- Toxapex: As a Poison/Water-type it resists Surging Strikes (only a 3HKO–4HKO even from the Band), so it walls the Water STAB indefinitely and can Haze, Recover, or Toxic in response. Crucially, this only holds if Urshifu is locked into Surging Strikes — Choice Band Close Combat is a 2HKO (51.6 - 61.2% on 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex), so a Band set that predicts the switch breaks through, and a Scarf set can pivot out with U-turn.
- Bulky Psychic-types: Cresselia and Slowbro can take hits and threaten back. Slowbro additionally resists Water, blunting Surging Strikes, though both must respect repeated guaranteed-crit hits.
- Amoonguss: As a Grass/Poison-type it resists both STABs — Choice Band Surging Strikes does only 29.2 - 34.7% and Close Combat 30.6 - 36.1% to 252 HP / 252+ Def Amoonguss — so it pivots in repeatedly and threatens Spore. Beware the Scarf set carrying Ice Spinner (35.2% of sets), which hits it super effectively and flips the matchup.
- Faster threats: Max-Speed Jolly Urshifu-Rapid-Strike sits at 322 Speed, which actually outruns or ties much of the unboosted tier — Jolly Landorus-Therian (309) is slower, and Timid Zapdos (328) only barely creeps it. Genuinely faster scarfless attackers like Iron Valiant (364) revenge it cleanly, and any Choice Scarf user does too. Most of all, beware Urshifu’s own Choice Scarf set, which jumps to 483 and flips the speed tier on nearly the whole field.
How to Beat It
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike is checked primarily through speed and bulk. Faster Pokémon can revenge kill it, while bulky walls that resist Water and Fighting can switch in repeatedly. Identify the item first: a Choice Band set is locked into one move and can be pivoted around, while a Choice Scarf set outpaces the relevant unboosted metagame short of Regieleki-style outliers and must be handled with priority or your own faster threats. Pivoting and chip damage are key to wearing it down before it overwhelms your team.
